Few mixtures are as toxic as absolute power and insanity. When nothing stands between a leader's delusion whims and seeing them carried them out, all sorts of bizarre outcomes are possible. Whether it is Ottoman Sultan Ibrahim I practicing archery on palace servants and sending out his advisers to find the fattest woman in the empire for his wife or Turkmenistan President Turkmenbashi renaming the days of the week after himself and constructing an 80-foot golden statue that revolves to face the sun, crazed leaders have plagued society for millenia. This book will look at the lives of the ten most mentally unbalanced figures in history. Some suffered from genetic disorders that led to schizophrenia, such as French King Charles VI, who thought he was made of glass. Others believed themselves to be God’s representatives on earth and wrote religious writings that they guaranteed to the reader would get them into heaven, even if they were barely literate. Whatever their background, these rulers show that dynastic politics made sure that a rightful heir always got on the throne – despite that heir's mental condition – and that power can destroy a mind worse than any mental illness.

Caligula's horse was named Incitatus, not IncaTitus as the author apparently believes. Although the book is amusing, and has a style that flows, it is written kind of superficially. I would not go as far as comparing this to Wikipedia, as some reviewers did, but certainly, it should be called "some of insane rulers" as these are definitely only a few. Omitting Hitler, Tito, Causescu, Nero, Louis XIV, etc or even Alexander the great, and a lot of pharaohs, to name only a few does disservice to historical ignoramuses, some of which read these books.

I was first attracted by the title and the book's cover, when I decided to buy it. I read the first few lines on the preview, and was immediately hooked. The book is fluent in telling stories of different megalomaniacs around the world. I learned a lot from it, but wished it was a bit bigger. Ten chapters weren't enough to attenuate my hunger for history, and I can't wait to start the next Michael Rank's book. Thumbs up Michael.
Don't waste your time on this book. Very little 'surprise content", nothing you can't find on Google
Last part of the book is adverts for all of Michael's other books!?
Why to sell yourself dude
History is very much of interest to me as try to become more acquainted with pieces of history that I am not familiar. It seems as time passes, what I have learned in the past has become fuzzy. I like having references that I can restore sections of history that I should have remembered from my time in school. Thanks for making this section of history available.
The author concentrated on critical people across a wide time span although more could be added to the list. It bring out a key point for this country to be careful that a current dictator can be lurking in our politics.
"History's Most Insane Rulers" was a disappointment, first of it is not a book, it is if anything a long article, due to the shortness, we only get a glimpse of each of the selected Insane Rulers, some are well known some I would call very sectarian choices.

If Michael Rank had written a real book, he could have added depth to the selected rulers and placed them within confines of time and place.

The reading only scratching the surface is what mostly irked me. And thereby making it an overpriced item at that. I would not recommend this 'book' at the price offered.
...You'll read for awhile and then it hit's you , " How did we last as long as we have, no matter your culture ? "
It appears the weirdo's of Egypt, Alexandria, & Israel with all the other follow the crazy crap King's who insisted like Egypt to inter-breed !!! ..... What would you expect from all= THAT INTERBREEDING ? .... not enough their genes weren't the best anyway ! Our blessings were that we always no matter how sexual the Royal Family was we always out numbered them ! Yes to all of us Peasants !!!!!
So you want to know about the all time jerks, but don't want to invest a lot of time e-books such as this are the answer. One normally is not moved to read about nut-jobs such as Turkmenistan's president Saparmurat Niyazov or Albanian leader Enver Hoxha, but the short format of the e-book is the perfect place to get acquainted with idiots who re-name the months of the year after themselves and believe they are made of glass. If there's any enjoyment to be had from emperor Caligula's eccentricities (he made his horse a senator), it may very well be that they make the present stupefying behavior of our politicians seem more palatable. It's good fun for the money and a good shower in the morning will make everything right again.
